Spirit Talking
       Conversations with the Spirit

Spirit Talkin'

Careful what you ask of me
It requires something from thee
This is where I lost you before
Though distractions amuse you well
Busyness only helps you fail
To be silent, still and listen more

Listening to the Spirit has nothing to do with ears and words. Spirits have no need for these things. They speak using the innate language we often call intuition. This is the original language.

Listen to your intuition, it's your Spirit Talkin', then do whatever you're directed to do. Asking, Listening and Doing is a simple way of looking at being spiritual. Are you passing the test?

I am not a performer of poetry. Heck! I'm not even a writer or a poet. Many times, saying so, seems self-indulgent. I am someone who uses writing, poetry and short stories hoping to encourage thinking, becoming, connecting.

I've been waiting all week on you to tell me what you want me to say. I've already said it with this book, website, blog, journal, articles, conversations and examples.

And the Spirit was like, You finished? Say it again. Would you go to your fields in Spring and say bring forth yams and corn because you have planted and harvested before and past seasons live in your memory? Say it again. This time I will open the way just as I have caused words to sprout and provided fields for planting.

And then the wind came after a long, doubtful period. It started in constellations moved through the poles and across the hemispheres. Rain followed. Slow, unrelenting, promising rain. Unlike before it soaked into the fiber of folks. Perhaps it was their souls that drank deeply with a thick thirst for solutions.

And the winds were the spirits of JFK, MLK, Mandela, Lincoln, Ghandi, Wells and those we never celebrate. They fight and defend freedom, equality and justice in any form just because of who they are and just because of us.

And the rains were truths sustaining life one drop and one difference at a time. Individual choices and single truths, though seemingly small, nurturing us all. Those who drank moved towards the horizon of hope and closer to each other.

After telling me about bravery last week, the Spirit poked me in the side and asked, “Can we move forward, please?” Though I hesitated, again, all it took was for me to say, “Yes we can,” again.

Last week I thought I was summarizing what it has taken when really it was what it’s gonna take. This is another phase and a time for refocusing. “A time for recommitment,” the Spirit added. “If you believe the most important thing about an accomplishment is the accomplishment itself, you don’t know the half of anything. Your thinking makes me finite, incapable of being all that I am. Blessings become abominations if they stop with your life.”

What kind of bravery does it take to believe you can fly and then do it? Is it the stuff of titans and superhumans? Not at all, only the imperfect are great; therefore, I must stop holding my breath when others are simply doing their best on purpose and take deep breaths plus giant steps for myself.

I asked myself am I capable, do I have what it takes, can I handle this? How does an imperfect person attain their greatness? I asked many times not realizing this was not about my ability but about doubt and my low expectation of the reservoir within. The answer came calmly as always, “Just know the Spirit is immeasurable. Nothing can stop you because nothing can stop me.” Next, the forever giving nature said, “Let’s work together on this.” After that, silence. And then its final answer exceeded my own expectations: “It takes the same amount of bravery to fly as it did for you to breathe your first breath not knowing you could or for how long. Yet, you continue because you must.”

When my spiritual energy and best physical energy merge, I am propelled outside of my ordinary orbit into serene spaces where writing and breathing are one.

If our temporary physical selves can sometimes adapt to changes in circumstance and environment, the everlasting spirit, the constant force and presence throughout ages, always can.

When we acknowledge the spirit self, we can comprehend any circumstance. What we succeed at or succumb to individually, affects the momentum and magnificence of the world. If we want to understand the state of the world we must seek to understand ourselves and each other.

These conversations take place on Writer's Whirlpool, yet the ideas and beliefs permeate the poems and short stories of Eloquence: Rhythm & Renaissance.
